Same $40 item.
Nine platforms. $8.00 of difference.
Every marketplace describes its fee differently — a commission here, “payment processing” there, a buyer-side fee somewhere else. The only comparison that means anything is what lands in your account. So here is one $40 sale, no shipping charged, run through every platform this calculator supports.
| Platform | Fee formula | Fee on $40 | You keep | Effective |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vinted | 0% | $0.00 | $40.00 | 0% |

| Mercari | 10% | $4.00 | $36.00 | 10% |
| Etsy | 9.5% + $0.45 | $4.25 | $35.75 | 10.6% |
| Gumroad | 10% + $0.50 | $4.50 | $35.50 | 11.3% |
| Whatnot | 10.9% + $0.30 | $4.66 | $35.34 | 11.7% |

| eBay | 13.6% + $0.40 | $5.84 | $34.16 | 14.6% |
| Poshmark | 20% | $8.00 | $32.00 | 20% |
$40 item, nothing charged for shipping, fees as published in August 2026. DoorDash is left out because it is a gig payout, not a marketplace sale — there is no seller fee to compare.
Reading the table honestly
Vinted keeps the most in your pocket on this sale and Poshmark the least — a $8.00 gap on a single $40 item, or 20% of the sale price. Across a hundred sales a year that is $800.00.
But the cheapest fee is not automatically the most money. A platform that takes 20% and sells your item in three days beats a platform that takes nothing and never sells it. Fees decide your margin; the audience decides whether there is a sale to take a margin on.
Where the ranking flips
- Cheap items.Fixed fees dominate. A $6 sale costs $0.65 on Depop (10.8%) but $0.60 on Mercari (10.0%) and nothing on Vinted — while Poshmark's flat $2.95 under $15 takes 49% of it.
- When you charge for shipping.Etsy, eBay, Whatnot and Mercari all charge their percentage on the postage the buyer pays. Add $8 shipping to this $40 item and eBay's fee rises from $5.84 to $6.93.
- Vinted's 0%. Genuinely zero for sellers, but buyers pay a ~5% + $0.70 protection fee on top of your price, which is money leaving the transaction that you never see. Compare on what the buyer spends, not on the seller fee alone.
- Offsite Ads. Etsy's $4.25 becomes $10.25 on this item if the sale is attributed to Offsite Ads — which would move it below Poshmark.
Run it on your own numbers
A $40 item with no shipping is a clean comparison, not your comparison. Put your real price, your real postage and what the item actually cost you into the calculator and the order of this table will probably change.
